Stone & Sparrow Farm and Mill started with the Lawrence Farmers’ Market in 2021 under the name Rain Crow Orchard and Farm. In 2023 they moved to a permanent stall location in West Lot on the south side. Dustin & Dauna Hess started growing grains in 2020 and started milling in 2022.
They originally planted an heirloom pear and apple orchard in 2019 and named their farm Rain Crow Orchard and Farm, however, the farm changed direction towards growing and milling ancient grains and they rebranded to Stone & Sparrow Farm and Mill, after the sparrows that play amongst the wheat and the granite stones that grind their spelt
Stone & Sparrow Farm and Mill is based in Melverne, Kansas, 36 miles from Lawrence. “Transparency is our number 1 goal and we hope to have relationships with all of our customers. Knowing where our food comes from is important. We hope to have our larger antique mills open to the public”.
