There are still a few donuts left at this hour too!
Farmers Margaret and Tad Kramer started farming th Farmers Margaret and Tad Kramer started farming their Lecompton-based Hidden Hollow Farm in 1990 and joined Lawrence Farmers Market as Vendor Members in about 2018 after a few years as a Floating Stall Member. Margaret has been growing food since graduate school, putting gardens in wherever she lived. Their farm is just north of Big Springs and encompasses around fifteen different garden spaces plus free-range chickens.

“When we’re asked what we grow, our response is that is it easier to list what we don’t grow” says Margaret, explaining that they’ve tried to grow almost everything that people want to buy. This year their experimental crop was okra as they try and grow a new crop each year.

Hidden Hollow Farm is a completely organic farm — no sprays, chemicals, herbicides, nor pesticides used. Instead they rotate crops, use cover crops, and fortify the soil with compost and regional varietals.

Margaret and Tad are concerned with rising temperatures that affect our local crops because of drought and extreme heat. They are strong environmental activists at our market and in the community - make sure to check out their postcards with tips to combat climate change here in our community, like simple steps including bringing your own tote bags as the plastic bag ban takes affect in Lawrence.

🍎Our scavenger hunt this week is for apples! It’s a shorter season for most of our apple growers, so if you’re looking for Gravenstine, Enterprise, Empire, Hardy Cumberland, Grove, Westchester, etc….make sure to swing through and pick your apples now - they’ll last you a lot longer at home in your fridge or cold storage than they will at market for next week!

Farmers & Processors Dan Fuller Sr & Christy Flynt Farmers & Processors Dan Fuller Sr & Christy Flyntz and Vintner Dan Fuller Jr started their Edgerton-based vineyard in 2003 & their winery in 2010. @whitetailrunwinery became LFM Vendor Members in 2020.

Dan Fuller Sr had been making beer & wine for a long time with a retirement plan to farm grapes for sale. Unfortunately, deer ate all of their grapes in the first year & thus was born the name of their winery. Eventually they had their first harvest in 2008, just as the economy was crashing & nobody was buying grapes - so they built their own winery instead!

White Tail Run wine is a truly Kansas agricultural product — they grow their own grapes & buy from other KS producers when necessary, sticking to the original intent of 60% KS ag. content. They have 1800 vines with 3 different varietals - Seyval, LaCrosse, & Chambourcin.

These are not your typical Kansas fruit wines. “We are award winners” says Christy — their first wine in 2008 won a Bronze medal. “We really enjoy going to farmers markets because we get to educate people about how Kansas & Missouri were the largest grape growing producers before prohibition”

White Tail Run Winery is only at our Tuesday Evening Market, bringing a wide variety of wines & sangrias. They also bring fresh produce from their kids: tomatoes, squash, watermelon, peppers from Cooper (10); cantaloupe & eggplant from Rylee (8) & Jelena (7); & fresh cut sunflowers grown by Mason (13).

Join them next weekend for a grape stomp & in October for their soft opening of their disc golf course.

Farmer and Processor Galina Conrad started her Law Farmer and Processor Galina Conrad started her Lawrence-based urban farm @lepetitgardenks in 2005 and began at Lawrence Farmers’ Market the same year. She had been growing and preserving food and gifting to neighbors when one of them recommended she start selling at the market.

When asked about the origin of Le Petit Garden’s name she replied “because I am petite and the garden is petite”. Galina has a lush backyard farm in the heart of Lawrence where she grows the majority of her ingredients for her various products. She also built her own licensed kitchen in her garage she uses to process all of her fruits and vegetables.

Galina uses no pectin or preservatives in her jams and slow cooks them for 2 days. Her salsa cooks for 3 hours and takes 30 pounds of vegetables to make a batch of 44 jars! We sat in with Galina while she made red and black raspberry jalapeño jelly and learned about the difference between jams, jellies, and preserves:
🫙Jam: smashed or crushed fruit
🫙Jelly: sugary and has pectin/gelatin
🫙Preserves: whole or cut pieces

You can find Le Petit Garden in the East Lot by the trailer every Saturday morning with a wide variety of salsa, chutney, jam, preserves, jellies, and pestos plus cut flowers and live plants and the occasional fresh produce. There is something for everyone — older people prefer her strawberry rhubarb jam and younger people prefer her salsa. “I like to make something interesting - I make gooseberry, black currant, and blueberry mixed jam”. Bonus: If you bring your jars back you’ll receive a 25 cent discount. Galina wants to remind customers to not turn the jars upside down while selecting products, which could encourage bacterial growth and recommends keeping her products in the fridge.

Our scavenger hunt this week is for potatoes! We are nearing the end of potato season and farmers are beginning to dig up sweet potatoes. We are so grateful for the cooler temps and Fall!
